Community Eye Health

Community Screening Camps

For over 34 years, ECOS Eye Hospital has been a leading force in combating preventable blindness in Odisha. Community outreach forms the cornerstone of such efforts, with eye screening camps playing a crucial role.

These camps, conducted across Ganjam, Khordha, Kandhamal, and other districts, provide vital eye care services to underserved communities. Comprehensive screenings include vision tests, refraction checks, and assessments for conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. The camps offer subsidized spectacles for those diagnosed with refractive errors, while patients requiring surgery are transported to the base hospital for treatment.

Beyond providing essential eye care, these camps play a vital role in educating the community about eye health, promoting awareness, and encouraging regular eye checkups.

Mobile Van Screening Camps

In 2022, ECOS Eye Hospital, in collaboration with CBM, launched mobile van eye screening camps. Since then, the program has significantly expanded, bringing eye care services directly to the doorstep of diverse communities.

These camps provide comprehensive eye examinations, including vision tests, refraction checks, and screening for conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Subsidized spectacles are offered for those requiring vision correction. Patients needing surgical intervention are transported back to the base hospital for treatment.

ECOS strategically targets various community groups through these mobile camps, including truckers, drivers at learning centers, and school children, ensuring that accessible eye care reaches those who need it most.

School Screening Camps

ECOS Eye Hospital regularly conducts school screening camps to proactively address the eye health needs of children. These comprehensive eye examinations include vision tests, refraction checks, and screenings for various ocular disorders. Children requiring vision correction are provided with subsidized spectacles. Those needing further treatment, such as surgery, are counseled and referred to appropriate centers.

The camp also focuses on educating children about eye health, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and healthy eye habits. Teachers are sensitized to recognize potential vision problems in students and encouraged to guide them towards seeking professional eye care.

By proactively identifying and addressing eye conditions in children, ECOS Eye Hospital aims to ensure early intervention and prevent potential vision loss, enabling children to reach their full potential.

Awareness Activities

A cornerstone of ECOS Eye Hospital's community outreach strategy is to empower individuals with knowledge about eye health. By raising awareness about various eye disorders and the importance of regular eye care, ECOS aims to reduce the prevalence of visual impairment within the community.

To achieve this, ECOS actively participates in significant health observances such as World Sight Day, World Glaucoma Week, and World Disability Day. Through engaging activities like educational rallies, street plays, and screening camps, ECOS disseminates vital information about eye health and encourages proactive eye care among the population.

This proactive approach to community engagement plays a crucial role in improving eye health outcomes and ensuring a brighter future for all.

Sensitization Programmes

Sensitization of local health workers is a key initiative by ECOS Eye Hospital to enhance eye health awareness and ensure timely care.

The programme includes lectures and workshops on primary eye health, visual acuity tests, refractive errors, and common eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. By training health workers, ECOS Eye Hospital enables early detection and referral, improving treatment outcomes.

Additionally, the programme promotes disability inclusion, educating health workers on removing societal and physical barriers for persons with disabilities. This ensures holistic support and equal healthcare access.

Relief Services During Natural Disasters

ECOS Eye Hospital plays a crucial role in community development by actively engaging in disaster relief efforts. The hospital also collaborated closely with district and state government officials and disaster response departments to coordinate relief efforts effectively and ensure timely assistance reached those in need.

During Cyclone Fani, the hospital mobilized its resources to provide essential support to affected communities in Ganjam district. Relief efforts included the distribution of vital supplies such as food, water, and tarpaulins to alleviate immediate needs. Medical services were also provided, including primary health check-ups, medication distribution, and referrals for further care.

This initiative reflects ECOS Eye Hospital's dedication to community service beyond eye care, emphasizing its role in fostering holistic community development.
