Human Stories - Mochiram

Mochiram Swain, a 77-year-old man from near Polosora in Ganjam district, Odisha, faced a lifetime of challenges. Born with congenital deformities in his legs and unable to communicate, Mochiram was often seen as a burden in his impoverished family. Living in a household barely able to afford two meals a day, he was often neglected and faced social isolation.

Adding to his hardships, Mochiram developed significant vision loss in right eye due to cataract after losing sight in left eye. This resulted in further limitation in his already restricted life. Recognizing his condition, the ECOS Eye Hospital team, under a CBM sponsored project, identified Mochiram as a potential beneficiary of free cataract surgery.

Undergoing phacoemulsification surgery, a modern technique to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), Mochiram's vision improved.

Following his successful recovery, Mochiram's life took a positive turn. He initiated a small tea shop, a testament to his newfound independence and determination to overcome his challenges. Mochiram's story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of quality eye care and the importance of comprehensive patient support, especially for vulnerable individuals with limited communication abilities.
